| Innovation in Football |
Sport is no game. It’s all about being higher, faster, better. And new technology
can really make a difference to improving performance by, for instance, monitoring
the health of sportsmen and boosting the insight of both the coach and his players.
Tactics, technique and physical strain are key aspects here. Collaboration between
the triangle of sport, the business world and knowledge institutes is indispensable
if you want to keep on the ball.
TNO, PSV, Philips, the Vrije University and the University of Groningen have given
the term ‘field laboratory’ a new dimension by developing a number
of football-related innovations. They have been experimenting with the very latest
in measuring equipment on the pitches of the PSV training complex in recent years.
The coaching staff of PSV have indicated what they consider to be the key performance
parameters in football. While tactics is considered very important, the monitoring
of (excess) physical strain also came high on the agenda. No coach likes to see
his star players taking the field carrying an injury.
To get a good picture, the project partners joined forces with various companies
to develop a prototype Field Lab with measuring equipment and viewing software.
Measuring terminals along the touchline and sensors in the vests worn by the players
were tested among various teams throughout 2004 and 2005. This year they are being
used in PSV’s youth training at De Herdgang.
